Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I want to invite you to join myself and Rep. Shelly Short for a telephone town hall meeting. We hope you'll join the conversation from the convenience of your home on Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 6-7 p.m. Just call (509) 724-2970 to participate. To ask us a question live, press * (star) on your phone. We're looking forward to talking to the folks back home while we're here in Olympia.

Last week, the House held a couple of work sessions on the Carlton Complex Fire. I KretzFireHearingwas proud of the locals from Okanogan County who shared what went wrong during the fire, and how the state needs to make changes before the next fire season. You can read more about the hearing in the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, on which I serve, here.

This week, the House heard several bills sponsored by myself and Rep. Shelly Short addressing wolves in our state. We're proposing several solutions to speed up wolf recovery and provide some much-needed relief for ranchers and families in Northeast Washington:

  • House Bill 1791 would direct the Department of Fish and Wildlife to use lethal means when necessary with wolves who have repeatedly killed livestock, and when a landowner has tried other means to stop the wolves.
  • House Bill 1792 would amend the wolf conservation and management plan to consider success when two out of three regions in our state have the required wolf population. Right now, all three regions must have wolf populations – but we all know most of them are breeding and living in our corner of the state.
  • House Joint Resolution 4002 would ask the DFW to revisit the wolf management plan and consider it a success given the number of breeding pairs we have in our state.

I was pleased to welcome several local folks in Olympia recently. It was great visiting with the Backcountry Horsemen, Washington State FFA President Apolinar Blanco and Okanogan County Fair Queen Lexee Howell.
